THE Kalmek Cup bowls tournament not only proved to be an excellent display of bowling skills at the Delville greens but also raised awareness and funds for the Save the Rhino campaign.

This successful Kalmek Cup hosted on Saturday, September 19, and Sunday, September 20, followed on the success of a smaller tournament held over the Easter weekend.

The president of the Delville Bowling Club, Keith Ruddle, and the vice-president, Brian Harley, attributed the success of this great tournament to all the efforts and assistance of the main sponsor B and W Instrumentation and Electrical from Alberton North, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) Sports, Recreation and Arts Department for the Southern Germiston area and the Delville BC committee.

An auction during the Kalmek Cup also raised R23 900 for Save the Rhino.

Thirty six teams from several districts took part and entries included the cream of the crop including Commonwealth medalist Gerry Baker and top bowler, Thinus Erasmus. Even teams from Middelburg-Wellington Sibanda and Tzaneen participated.

Gavin Erasmus’ side with Thinus Erasmus were the Kalmek Cup winners, the runner-up team was Dunster Jano’s side, third Jaco du Preez’s side and fourth Gerry Baker’s side. The plate winners were Garth White’s side.
