WATCH: Talented designer just wants to be creative

"I love what I do. God gave me a talent and I hope to be able to use it to build a life for myself" says fashion designer.

AS an eight-year-old he started drawing pictures in the sand but today Glody Ndebo (23) draw designs on anything he can get his hands on.

With a portfolio of fashion designs in hand, some of which were hastily drafted on paper he quickly acquired when the ideas popped into mind, he explains that he discovered his talent when he was a youngster still living in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

“My mother Fany brought me and my sister Alpha to South Africa in 2004 as she wanted us to have a better life in a country where we can also learn to speak English,” said Glody, who now lives in New Redruth, Alberton.

“My friends at school saw my talent and this is where I got remuneration for my work. I sold designs for R20 a piece at the time.”

When he went to Jules High School he realised he had more than just a talent for drawing, but also for other art forms such as acting and singing.

“I have taken part in every single activity at school that involved the arts.”

In 2008, his acting performance was awarded the trophy for best performance by an actor in a supporting role during the Orama Festival, which is part of the Hillbrow Theatre Project.

In 2011 Glody matriculated and has since continued working on his designs while working part-time at various jobs.

“My love is still in fashion designs and I hope to still one day be able to get a professional tertiary education in this field. My school did not have art as a subject which contributed to me having to learn the skill by myself.”

Glody said he finds inspiration by looking at creations from other designers.

“I love what I do. God gave me a talent and I hope to be able to use it to build a life for myself.”

He enjoys drawing dresses, gowns and male suites.

“Designers already have a vision of what they want to do, even long before it is on paper. All that is required then is to put that vision onto paper,” said Glody who takes about a day to draw and plan his creations.

“A designer needs to focus on what people want to see, you need to go into a creative world.”

He hopes to one day have his own clothing label titled Alfadaglo, a combination of his name and his mother and sisters.
