Provincial SAPS together with Shoprite Checkers compiled a list of useful tips in efforts to assist communities in their fight against crime

ALBERTON — With housebreaking incidents receiving more and more exposure in newspapers and on social networks, it has become apparent to residents that there has been an increase.

Provincial SAPS, together with Shoprite Checkers, compiled a list of useful tips in an effort to assist communities in the fight against crime.

If your house has been broken into:

*It will always come in handy for residents to make a list of the make, model and serial numbers of electrical appliances and other valuable equipment. This should always be available for investigation purposes in case of a crime.

*It has become common practice for residents, who are victims of crime, to contact the sector CPFs and private security companies. The SAPS advises that unless it’s absolutely necessary, don’t allow private security on the premises before police have investigated.

*Security personnel shouldn’t be allowed to touch anything in order to avoid the contamination of evidence.

* Residents should also wait until fingerprints and statements have been taken before touching anything.

* Look for strange footprints in the garden and point them out to the police.

Preventing housebreaking and theft, this is what you should do:

*Be careful what is discussed in front of staff.

*Never leave contract workers unattended in your house/business premises

*Conduct a thorough background check before employing anyone (permanent or casual workers). Request their identity documents and make a copy for safe keeping.
