Cat shot with air gun

A resident wants to know how anyone can be so cruel.

MEYERSDAL — A pellet from an air gun missed the main organs of a Meyersdal resident’s beloved cat by millimeters.

An emotional Sandy van Rooyen (56) said she was busy in her home on Sunday afternoon, August 16, when she noticed her cat, Casper, running to the main bedroom.

“At first I did not think anything of it. It was only when I went to the bedroom and saw blood on the bed where my cat was lying that I suspected something was wrong.”

She immediately rushed him to the nearest vet where she was told that there was a pellet lodged near the kidney but it had missed the cat’s vital organs.

“I don’t know why anyone would shoot an animal. If they can shoot my cat, I shudder to think what they can do to a human being.”

PROOF: The pellet which injured Sandy van Rooyen’s beloved cat.

Van Rooyen said she hopes her story will be a warning to other residents, around the Eagles Landing 2 complex in Palomino Street, to be more vigilant when their pets, especially their cats, are out of sight.

“My cats aren’t a problem to any other residents as I tend to keep an eye on them. They are seldom left to leave the house at night.”

She said hopefully someone will come forward with more information.

“We have been living in this complex for over two years and never have we had any problems before.”

Van Rooyen, a passionate animal lover, said if she finds out who the person is she will be giving them the vet’s bill which amounts to R2 906.

Casper will go for a check-up in the next three weeks.

“This is my child, how can anyone be so cruel?”

Van Rooyen has reported the matter to the Alberton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
