ALBERTON – Residents of Pamela Gardens in Verwoerd Park have reportedly lived with the smell of sewage throughout their complex for eight months.
After months of correspondence between locals and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, the metro has reportedly referred the case to the Department of Water and Sanitation.
EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe stated that “the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Environmental Health Directorate’s investigation, on June 29, 30 and July 1 2015, revealed that the main source of the smell appears to be the storm water catchment pit on the pavement opposite the car wash and the storm water drain in front of Pamela Gardens”.
EMM workers visited the food premises at the Second Avenue shopping complex and reported that the grease traps at the back of the complex are regularly cleaned. A private company reportedly cleaned the traps during a follow-up visit on July 1.
“A meeting was held with the complainants on June 30 and they are aware of the Environmental Health Directorate’s position on this matter,” said Gadebe.
The Department of Water and Sanitation will investigate the cause of the smell.
