Abandoned building raises concern

An abandoned building in Alrode is causing concern to neighbouring business who fear that the building is a safety hazard.

ALBERTON – A seemingly abandoned building in Vanderbijl Street is causing concern to neighbouring businesses in Alrode South.

Ian Lotter, a neighbouring businessman, told the RECORD that several inspectors from various departments have visited the site and issued warnings to the tenant of the building.

The tenant has reportedly moved out and the building now stands abandoned. Businesses alongside the abandoned building are concerned about the security and health risks which may be caused due to their proximity to the structure.

While reports have been made to the municipality, nothing has been done. The building is reportedly being stripped of the electrical wiring and metal windows after hours.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality was contacted by the RECORD several times for comment, but have not received feedback yet.
