Corli gets breathless for PHA

Mrs SA semi-finalist, Corli Carratu is rinding the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge to raise awareness of the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) of South Africa.

ALBERTON- As a young woman, Corli Carratu arrived in Johannesburg and built a life for herself.

She married her high school sweetheart and together they have three children who are in Laerskool Randhart.

In the past nine years, Corli has opened three pre-schools and offers first aid training to pre-school workers and teachers. In the beginning of 2015, she entered Mrs South Africa in hopes of reaching pre-school learners in rural and disadvantaged areas.

During her journey, she identified many other needy organisations including the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) of SA. Pulmonary Hypertension (PH) is a disease which affects the lung’s arteries regardless of age, gender or social background.

People suffering from PH have high blood pressure in their lungs which can result in an enlargement of the heart and can lead to heart failure. Symptoms include breathing difficulties, tiredness, oedema and chest pains. One of the slogans for PHA is “Get breathless for PHA”. As the brand ambassador for PHA, Corli will be riding the Momentum 947 Cycle Challenge to raise awareness about this disease in South Africa.

She is also involved in Miss Deaf SA and will be one of the judges in October 2015. Her desire to be involved with this organisation stems from the fact that she has a stepsister and brother who were born deaf due a genetic defect. “Although I lost some friends in this journey, I have also made new friends who understand that I am not interested in competing with others, I just want to be a better version of myself. Pageants for married women are not only about women who think they are beautiful but also about women who want to make a difference in someone else’s life. I want to give my time, effort and passion to the community.”
