Mayberry Park has sprung a leak

ALBERTON – Residents of Mayberry Park have been experiencing water leaks on Potgieter Street and J G Strijdom Road.

After reporting the leaks to the municipality, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) responded by stating that the metro is aware of the leaks and provided some details to the cause of the problem.

According to Themba Gadebe, EMM spokesperson, the numerous water leaks which have occurred on the main high pressure water line next to Swartkoppies Road, Potgieter Street and J G Strijdom Road are because of stray currents from main electricity feeds, Gaskor lines and Petronet lines in the area. The city is busy with a project to upgrade the cathodic protection system on its steel water mains to compensate for the stay currents causing this concentrated erosion.

*According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, cathodic protection is the prevention of electrolytic corrosion of a usually metallic structure (as a pipeline) by causing it to act as the cathode rather than as the anode of an electro chemical cell.
