Alberton designers shine at Miss SA pageant

ALBERTON-Three beautiful designers from Alberton had the privilege of having their ballgowns being chosen by three Miss SA finalists for the crowning ceremony.

Danika Barnard, Carien Otto and Nikita-Tiffany Basson all grew up in the South of Johannesburg and met at the Spero Villioti Elite Design Academy in Hydepark. They are all currently completing their third year of fashion studies.

“We designed and created the ballgowns as our final second year project, never thinking that something as awesome as this would happen,” said Carien. Chanelle Sardinha chose to wear Carien’s delightful dress.

“Seeing those girls up there in our gowns made all the blood, sweat and tears worthwhile. I eventually hated my gown and it was a humbling experience when Liezl Laurie chose to wear it” says Danika.

Nikita says she just wanted to cry and that it was an amazing evening sitting in the audience. Her dress was worn by finalist Tarryn Morris.

The girls then told the story of how they still had to do final alterations in the hotel room at Sun City, the night before the pageant’s crowning ceremony. According to the girls, if the dress was too big on the night, the organisers would just discard it on the spot, so they never knew if their dresses would actually make it onto the runway.

“The only real memory I have of the pageant was seeing Chanelle walk out onto the stage with my dress. What a humbling experience and gift from above,” says Carien.
