Pensioner’s shack burns to the ground in Edenpark

By the time the fire brigade arrived everything he owned had burned to ashes, including his ID and SASSA card.

EDEN PARK – On Friday night, May 1, Mr Edward Prentjies, a 72-year-old pensioner went to bed with a candle burning in his room.

He fell asleep and forgot about the candle.

By the time the fire brigade arrived, everything he owned had burned to ashes, including his ID and SASSA card. There was another Zozo next to his and this also burnt to the ground.

DESTITUTE: Mr Edward Prentjies lost all of his possessions in the fire.

Mr Prentjies’ wife passed on last year and he lived alone at 24 Cortina Street, Edenpark.

I would like to make an appeal to the community to assist with sheeting to rebuild his home and that of Manila Wynand.

Any donations of furniture, bedding, crockery, clothing and other essentials will also be welcome.

Anyone who is able to help is requested to contact me on 082 921 2856.

Councillor Samantha Nair.
