Metro apologises for two week-long power cut

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has sent out thanks to residents and businesses in Alberton for their patience and understanding during the ongoing power interruption, beginning on Friday, April 24.

The power crisis resulted as a product of theft and vandalism, at substation Z7 in Alrode.

Thieves made off with two oil valves from the transformers at the facility, causing the loss of 20 000lts of oil. Consequently the substation was unable to supply electricity to parts of Alrode and Thokoza.

During the repair of the substation more oil valves were stolen, causing a larger power disruption and increased workload for technicians.

In an effort to reduce the inconvenience to residents and businesses in Alrode and Thokoza, the metro implemented a temporary load reduction schedule.

Limited power supply from other substations was used to give residents and industrial businesses some access to electricity.

In a media statement, released on Friday, April 8 the EMM acknowledged that businesses and residents were negatively affected by the power supply interruption and sincerely apologised for the inconvenience caused.

EMM called for residents to play a role in the fight against vandalism and theft by contacting the municipal services call center on 0860 543 000, to report any suspicious conduct or people tampering with municipal infrastructure.
