Bicycle hijackers strike again

On Thursday, April 26, Greg Moloney and his wife Samantha, were riding along their regular training loop on Old Vereeniging Road when three African males cut them off by standing across the carriageway.

The three men blocked their path and Greg swerved to avoid them. The suspects then pulled out knives, grabbed his bicycle and attempted to steal his cell phone. Greg’s bicycle was the only item stolen from the couple. Samantha stopped her bike before coming close to the potential assailants and watched as they robbed her husband.

Passing motorists stopped to assist and attempted to pursue the suspects.

After reporting the case at Brackendowns SAPS station, the incident was investigated and four suspects were arrested the following day. Greg was told that his bicycle had been transported via taxi and was on the way to Mozambique.

The suspects were detained at Brackendowns SAPS and appeared at Palm Ridge Magistrates court on April 28, on charges of common robbery. The case was later transferred to Alberton SAPS for further investigation.

Sgt Lindi Moloi, Brackendowns SAPS spokesperson, has stated that SAPS are aware that people are being targeted for smash and grabs and robberies on Vereeniging Road, as well as Potgieter Road, the R59 and Swartkoppies.
