Gift for Stepping Stone

ALBERTON – Hospice Week, celebrated from May 3 to 10 by the Hospice Palliative Care Association of South Africa, was particularly special this year, to Stepping Stone Hospice.

A celebratory evening was held at the hospice on Wednesday, May 6.

The purpose of the evening was to hand over the funds raised by the wives and partners of the Alberton Men’s Choir to benefit the hospice.

The Wheelbarrow Raffle project was launched two months ago, with the aim of raising enough funds to assist Stepping Stone Hospice in purchasing more beds for their now extended in-patient unit.

A wheelbarrow filled with goodies to the value of R2 500 was up for grabs and, on Saturday, May 2, the lucky draw took place at Meyersdal Spar, with Diane Keys drawn as the lucky raffle ticket holder.

Certificates of recognition were given to Rienie Venter and Kia Bierman, who spearheaded the project.

The Men’s Choir performed a selection of five songs and closed off the proceedings by leading the assembly in singing Amazing Grace together.

The gathering was addressed by Stepping Stone CEO Tersia Burger, who thanked the entire team of healthcare workers and support staff, and recognised key team members personally.

The wheelbarrow initiative raised R24 000 for the palliative care facility, which will be used to purchase four new hospital beds for Stepping Stone’s in-patient unit.

Management and staff of this, Alberton’s first and only hospice facility, were overwhelmed with joy.

The in-patient unit was recently extended by 100sq m and now offers seven dignity rooms.

Fund-raising is on-going, as the new rooms need to be furnished and medical equipment needs to be purchased.
