City requests non-perishable food donations

The Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services requests that donations of food made to provide relief to displaced foreign nationals in Germiston to be uncooked, non-perishable foods.

Reports of diarrhoea that may have been caused by food poisoning at the Poppiespruit Park and Elsburg relief centres over the weekend have moved EMM officials to request non-perishable foods.

Ekurhuleni acting spokesperson, Lebogang Ramashala stated: “The City of Ekurhuleni is greatly appreciative of and welcomes the assistance of churches, non-profit organizations and community members. However, we would like to make the request that donations of food made should not be cooked.

“The City also calls for donations of infant formula, disposable nappies and other baby essentials,” she said.

Meanwhile, the City’s Environmental Health Practitioners have beefed up operations to decrease the risk of poisoning, and will be conducting tests several times a day.

The City has stated that the situation remained stable over the weekend.
