Attacked on N12, boy still in coma

A young boy (8) is still in a coma after he was struck by a brick on the N12.

ALBERTON – What should have started as a long weekend away turned to a nightmare for the Slabbert family when a brick was thrown though the passenger window and hit Caden.

Cadenā€™s father, Justin, picked up his two children, his daughter Eden and his son Caden, at Monument Primary School. They were on their way home to pack for their weekend away, when the incident occurred on the N12 West, just before the Glen.

A man standing on the side of the highway threw a brick at the vehicle. The brick went through the passenger window of the familyā€™s car.

Shocked by what happened, Justin called to his daughter who was in the back of the car. He asked her if she was fine. She answered her father and said she was fine. When Justin asked Caden the same question, there was no reply. The brick had struck Caden on his head.

Justin said he knew the Union hospital was close by and that he had to get there as quickly as possible.

On his way to the Union Hospital, still on the N12, he noticed an ambulance in the fast lane and decided to swerve into the fast lane to stop the ambulance crew and ask for assistance.

The ambulance stopped and at that time another car stopped close to them as well. The same thing had happened to them and a woman was injured.

After the initial help, both Caden and the other woman were transported to the Union Hospital in Alberton for further care.

Caden has since then been transferred to the Clinton and is still in a coma.
