Food health experts test street food

The World Health Organisation selected a global public concern as a priority for the theme of World Health Day on April 7; celebrating the birth of the organisation.

Ekurhuleni environmental health practitioners trained over 430 food vendors in elements of food safety as part of the initiative.

The training was conducted at Thokoza Youth Centre, Palmridge Hall, Zonkesizwe Hall and Lethukuthula High School Hall. 260 Food handlers who provide meals to schools were trained at the high school hall and were issued with certificates of hygiene.

The programme was based on the five keys to safer food as described by the National Department of Health. The five keys are defined as cleanliness, separation of raw and cooked food, food being cooked completely, water and raw material safety and food storage.

On Wednesday April 22, environmental health practitioners went back to 15 vendors who were trained to collect samples for analysis to check compliance.

The samples have been taken to Wits University to be tested. Health practitioner John Ngobeni stated his confidence in the safety and security of the food produced by the vendors.
