Security guard back after brutal attack

At around nine o’clock on the morning of Monday March 16, a security officer on guard at a Meyersdal complex was attacked by two men claiming to be working at one of the residences inside.

The security guard stated that a Ford Ranger with two white men inside pulled up to the intercom and told him to open the gate. A bakkie with four African men followed and parked outside. He informed them that the policy of the complex was for residents to let any visitors or workers inside. He had not been informed that any workers were expected that day. The men in the car began shouting racial obscenities at him, and after gaining access to the complex, they struck.

Both men attacked the security officer with crushing blows to his face. Blinded by blood, he ran from his assailants into the street. In an interview with the RECORD, the security officer stated that he shouted at the two men that if they didn’t leave him alone, he would shoot. They reportedly did not stop chasing him until he shot one warning shot into the air.

The suspects then fled and hid within the complex, before the SAPS and private security personnel arrived and facilitated their arrest. The second car sped off before police were on the site.

The security guard was immediately hospitalised. His gun, ammunition and license were confiscated on the scene. He was hospitalised for one week, and had to undergo surgical reconstruction of the bones around his eye.

Two weeks later he has returned to work, but is still recovering from his injuries. “I have to wear sunglasses outside. The light hurts my eyes,” he said.

The security guard has asked to remain anonymous.
