Garden club learns about birds of South Africa

Johannesburg South Garden Club members were treated to a talk by Ray Topp about birds of South Africa at their Saturday meeting in April.

JOHANNESBURG SOUTH – Ray said South Africa ranks as one of the top birding destinations in the world, offering a variety of birds and birders come from around the world to experience the bird life.

“There are about 850 species of birds in SA, and about 50 of these are endemic or near-endemic to SA and can only be seen here. SA also hosts a number of African migrants such as cuckoos and kingfishers, as well as birds from the Arctic, Europe, Central Asia, China and Antarctica during the year,” Ray added.

Attracting birds to gardens

“If you would like to attract birds to your garden, it’s important to plant an assortment of plants that provide food throughout the year, such as seeds, berries and nuts.

“Buy or make a feeding station. The seed dispersing tube feeder is a good idea for small birds, and this will also discourage doves and pigeons. Platform bird feeders where bread, suet and fruit can be placed are a great idea. These bird feeders can be hung from a branch of a tree.

“Every garden should have a bird bath, if possible near established trees. Keep the bird bath topped up with water. You’ll be surprised which birds you’ll attract to your garden, and you’ll get to know the different species,” concluded Ray.
