Spar gang foiled

'You hear about these guys who rob one Spar after the other and you know your day is coming. But today is a victory for justice as this gang was stopped in its tracks.' - Kabir

ALBERTON- At 10:30 Wednesday morning, April 22, a group of 10 men robbed the Crestview Spar in South Crest, Alberton.

Marcia, a floor manager, was in an aisle with a customer, and suddenly heard people running and shouting from the front of the shop. She ran to the back of the store with other customers and workers and hid away.

After entering, one man shouted for the door to be closed, but in the confusion no one did what he said. Some of the others drew their guns and started raiding the tills for cash and took floats and money from the cash office.

A Spar manager said that one robber couldn’t cope with the weight of the coin box and eventually dropped it. The other robbers ran out and left in vehicles. They left him and one other suspect behind, and upon exiting the store they ran straight into the police and SOG.

The police then set up a trap and caught the other suspects in City Deep. The Spar Risk Manager identified the suspects as being involved in the previous Spar robberies and the shooting of the Rosettenville Spar store manager on March 7 this year.

One suspect is still at large, but the police is tracing him.

Kabir, who works at Crestview, says he lives in fear but wants to give credit to the police. “You hear about these guys who rob one Spar after the other, and you know your day is coming.”

Spar Crestview would like to extend their gratitude to everyone who helped them.

The store manager says: “The police were here immediately and made all the arrests and they were incredibly professional. Metro police were amazing. We want to give credit where credit is due. We also thank the SOG and CPS for their assistance in the matter.”
