Councillor assaulted by residents

What started as a peaceful and orderly meeting between Ward 53 residents and the councillor, ended with a big fight in which Cllr Gladstone Zide sustained injuries.

The police report states that Cllr Zide organised a meeting with residents on Friday, March 28 and invited an official from EMM to address residents, and when the councillor had his turn, chaos and mayhem erupted.

“The EMM official was escorted to his car and instructed to leave, while others assaulted Zide. The police were summoned but on arrival, Zide had already sustained injuries on his forehead and arms, and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

“We arrested a community leader, Michael Mavuso, and four other residents, who will appear in the Palmridge Court on charges of assault and grievous bodily harm,” said Captain Mhlophe.

It was further alleged by the police that the residents were agitated by the councillor’s way of allocating all jobs to Greenfield’s residents, who are his friends and part of his ‘cabinet’.

Residents referred to their March on February 18, when they demanded the councillor’s removal and accused him of nepotism and lack of running his office and service delivery.
