History Society unable to inspect interior

UPDATE: The Ekurhuleni Metro Property Management and Alberton Heritage Society were set to meet at the Old Alberton Town Hall on Monday March 30.

ALBERTON – The meeting took place, and the plans for the Town Hall were viewed by both parties, but according to Beverley-Ann Small of the Heritage society the Property management never had keys for them to enter the Town Hall.

The interior of the Town Hall could not be inspected by the Heritage Society.

“It is impossible to have established what structural changes took place on the inside of the building as we could not access the interior. We are awaiting confirmation as to when this inspection can take place,” Beverley-Ann added.

The contractors have issued a letter in reply to one they received from the Heritage Society; a letter was forwarded to the RECORD as a statement from Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality.

The letter states that the permanent upgrades and renovations to be implemented concentrated on the existing ablution facilities and some external work in front of the building to manage the existing storm water problem. This is necessary for the building to comply with current health and safety regulations. The internal upgrades are only fittings and finishes in the portions of the building that were additions after 1938. Previous additions on the east side of the hall were done by others.

The Alberton Heritage Society are asking residents to help, if you see any work done on the Town Hall please contact Beverley-Ann on 083 379 6247 or Daan on 083 380 4072.
