Meet the tie man

Collectible sport items range from all sport memorabilia to individual collections of caps or photographs or ties.

One Alberton man has become hooked on ties, but other sport memorabilia like rugby programmes and sport books are also part of Peet van Niekerk’s (from Verwoerd Park) unique collection.

Peet’s career in the working world started in the era of the “baby boomers”, when ties were a compulsory part of the dress code in the formal office working environment. This is where his love for ties started, and combined with the fact that he is a sport fanatic, sport ties from an integral part of his unique collection with hundreds of ties in his ownership, you will seldom see him without a tie and his choice for the day is always theme-related.

On Freedom Day, April 27, his tie is always the SA flag tie, when the Springboks play a rugby test, just look for Peet with one of his several rugby ties around his neck. His American flag tie and the July 4 date are synonyms.

However, sport memorabilia like rugby programmes and rugby history books and sport autobiographies are also part of this sport fanatic’s collection, with the primary focus on rugby.

Some of his most prized items include the original official programme of the 1995 World Cup final at Ellis Park, the programme of the opening of Loftus Versfeld’s new stadium back in 1978 and much more – any collector’s dream.

Other sport collectors are welcome to share their love for or interest in sport memorabilia with Peet on 011 902 4057 (after hours).
