New houses for the needy in Vosloorus

60-year-old receives house after sharing his shack with six of his children for 15 years.

ALBERTON – Many lives in Villa- Liza Extension 3, Vosloorus were changed recently by the Gauteng Government, Matthews Riba from the government department reported.

This was when residents of the area such as Luka Likhoehla saw a huge transition as he moved into his newly built RDP house, handed over by Gauteng Premier David Makhura alongside Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele and MEC for Human Settlement Jacob Mamabolo.

The 40-year-old Likhoehla, a resident of informal settlement, had been living in a shack since 2000, and had not lost hope since he applied for the RDP house in 2001.

His neighbour Simon Makgoga (60) had to share his shack with six of children for 15 years. Today he was among the elated residents in the area to see their lives changed for the better by the Department of Human Settlement.

“I have been on the waiting list since 2001, and I am happy that I will have a proper roof over my children’s heads. I am relieved about what the Gauteng Government has done for my family,” Likhoela said.

Premier Makhura expressed his concern about the delay in many areas, and the wait people often endure. Many have waited for several years before they are given houses. He had urged all the contractors and entities involved in the construction to accelerate the delivery of houses.

“There are a number of areas in the province where there have been delays,” said MEC Mamabolo. “Mayors and munipalities in the province need to fast-track the completion of the houses. You can see that those who were getting in to the new houses today, it’s a new thing for them entirely.”.

Seventy-four newly built houses were handed over and 589 stands will still be built.

This is a programme that the Department of Human Settlement has taken upon itself to make the lives of Gauteng residents better.
