Young minds weigh in on HIV/AIDS

Robust debate on how to reduce the prevalence of HIV and Aids in our society will be heard tomorrow at the Alberton Hall, as masters of the oratory skill from different areas will battle it out to be crowned the 2015 grand winner of the Ekurhuleni HIV/AIDS High School Public Speaking Competition.

The annual competition, which started on February 6, is used by the City of Ekurhuleni as a vehicle to bring about a paradigm shift in the minds of young people on issues relating to HIV/ AIDS and reproductive health.

The provocative theme of the competition: “Ekurhuleni has the highest HIV prevalence rate. How do we step up the pace in the fight against HIV/AIDS, STIs and TB” is expected to cause sparks on the podium.

“The constant dialogue and debate on issues of HIV and Aids as well as reproductive health is key to turning the tide around issues of stigmatisation. It equips our learners with relevant and accurate information, which helps them to take informed decisions about their lives. We want our learners to know that silence is our enemy when it comes to issues of HIV and Aids. They must step up and talk about it,” Ekurhuleni Spokesperson Themba Gadebe said.

The competition will take place at the Alberton Civic Centre from 09:00 until 15:30 on Thursday February 12.
