National spelling bee open for entries

The Department of Basic Education has made a call to all schools in South Africa to enter the second annual National Spelling Bee.

The Department of Basic Education has made a call to all schools in South Africa to enter the second annual National Spelling Bee.

The first Bee took place in October 2014, when 27 of the country’s top spelling contestants competed to be crowned the best speller in the country. This year schools are once again encouraged to urge their learners to enter the contest.

The 2015 Spelling Bee is open to learners in grades four, five and six. It is only held in English.

To enter schools will be required to complete the registration form that should be stamped by the school principal, and send the form to the line function in the provincial department.

Upon receipt of the registration form, the relevant official in the province will organise a workshop to clarify the rules of the competition and conduct elimination rounds up to the provincial level.

The DBE will receive the names of the provincial winners and host a spelling competition in October at a venue to be confirmed.

The list of words to be used in the competition is available on the Thutong Portal under the School Enrichment and Sport section and  on the DBE website.

The Spelling Bee is part of the Integrated National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy: A Whole School Approach, which is a campaign to improve learners’ performance in languages, especially in English.

The closing date for the registration of the competition is March 31.

Participation in the programme is free.
