Another tree bites the saw dust

Another healthy municipal tree has been cut down by a resident, in contrast to their neighbours who have asked for trees to be planted on their sidewalk.

ALBERTON – Ekruhuleni Metropolitan Municipality recently had a 100 trees per ward project that saw councillors and the municipality taking the initiative to enrich our environment.

This project will have no real impact if residents do not take some responsibility themselves.

This was the feeling of Alberton residents who were saddened after they saw a healthy tree cut down on their neighbour’s sidewalk.

“What frustrates me about this situation is that it is counterproductive. The council launched a campaign last year that aimed to plant 100 trees in every ward. Our environment and taking care of it should fall on all residents, not just some, and definitely not only the higher authorities like the council.

“I would like to urge the public to realise the importance of trees in our community. Before you cut down any tree, consider the noise pollution, the air pollution and global warming. What environmental legacy are you leaving to your children and grandchildren?” asked Beverley-Ann Small, chairperson of the Alberton Historic Society.

According to Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality, the resident was in the wrong, cutting down a tree that grows on municipal ground. “Upon carrying out an investigation, it was discovered that the tree was removed without the Metro’s permission. A request was sent to Alberton Metropolitan Police Department to assist with issuing a fine to the offender.

“The fine will be done according to the EMPD’s code for damage to Council property,” a Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson said in a statement.
