No peace for Deep in the Woods’ victim

Four months later, four people shot, and the suspect was shot four times, but still no statement given by one victim.

ALBERTON – According to one of the victims of the shooting at Deep in the Woods festival last year she has yet to give her statement to the police.

The victim who is still recovering from a shot in her shoulder has not given her statement to the police and this is after they, from their side, have been in contact with the police a number of times.

She has, however, taken it on herself to write a statement while the incident was still fresh in her memory.

Her mother, Jenni, told the RECORD that no arrest have been made yet.

The suspect, who originally had a warrant out for his arrest, is out and about. According to his Facebook page, it is clear for everyone to see how the suspect enjoyed time with family and friends over the festive season.

When Jenni questioned his arrest with the police she was told that the warrant for his arrest was temporarily withdrawn while he was in hospital. The police officer also told her that the suspect was still in a coma. This was in December 2014.

She knows this is not true, as posts on Facebook and Instagram show that he is well and having a most enjoyable festive time; this in contrast with one of the victims of the shooting still receiving medical attention and going for counselling after her traumatic experience.

The RECORD has tried to make contact with the provincial SAPS spokesperson. The last reply that we have received on this matter was on a general question when we asked if there is a time limit to taking statements from victims. The reply on that matter was: “As I have indicated: in most cases it must be taken as soon as possible whilst the incident is still fresh in the memory of a witness,” Lt Col Dlamini Lungelo explained.

This statement was made via email on October 29, 2014. Since then the RECORD has sent multiple emails asking questions about the case and the progress thereof. After five emails we have not yet received any other information regarding this case.

The organisers of Deep in the Woods have already started preparation for the next festival, according to a post on their Facebook page, posted on January 19.

“It’s like it never happened, which is rather upsetting to us. Everyone is just caring on with their day to day lives,” Jenni said.
