DA demands Mayor address underspending

Throughout the first Council meeting the problem of underspending in municipal departments was addressed by ANC and DA representatives.

The DA has consequently released a statement demanding that executive Mayor Mondli Gungubele and Finance MMC Moses Makwakwa crack the whip on financial mismanagement.

The capital budget was adjusted this financial year to reflect almost R1bn more than the last financial year. However; the spending level has been significantly lower than the last financial year, according to the council meeting notice. Proposed adjustments to the budget to address this issue are, among others, that funds be reallocated between projects and rescheduled according to project plans.

The DA concluded their statement by saying: “Residents do not care if it is capital or operating budgets that are being poorly spent. They only see the result, and councillors are being personally attacked on the state of roads, water supply, proper sanitation and interrupted power supply. The ruling party are failing residents on all fronts. If it continues on this downward spiral in respect of service delivery, we will soon reach a point of no return.”
