Community against looting

On Monday January26, after following the news about the Soweto looting of spaza shops belonging to foreigners, the young nyaope smokers tried to be copycats by attacking shops owned by foreigners.

EDEN PARK  – Unfortunately for them, this time the community stood behind the shop owners.

Young and old helped to load stock on bakkies. The Eden Park Police, accompanied by the Metro Police, acted swiftly and assisted in moving stock from the shops. The looters never had a chance to grab anything and only stood around empty-handed.

Many residents, especially the pensioners, were very angry with the attempted looting and closing of the spaza shops. One old lady remarked: “Where are we going to get bread now? These foreigners were kind to us and would give goods even when the money was short. Look, we helped them to load their goods and they gave everyone a loaf of bread and a cola-drink. Now we must travel far to buy bread and milk.”
