Crime fighters team up

A tactical operation between private security, community safety organisations and police departments was carried out on Tuesday, January 27.

The operation targeted the corner of Vereeniging and Potgieter roads in Alrode, Alberton.

Vereeniging Road has been described as a smash-and-grab hotspot by Sgt Moloi at Brackendowns SAPS. According to the sergeant, trucks and bakkies have been targeted by criminals jumping into the bed of the trucks and stealing easily transportable goods like tools and scrap metal.

The tactical unit is a partnership between private security companies, Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police, the Community Police Forum; reservists and Brackendowns SAPS. Fox Security, D&D Tactical, ADT, 4th Dimension and Tactical Strike Force armed response accompanied the CPF, reservists, EMPD and SAPS. Over ten vehicles were involved in the execution of the setup including quad bikes, unmarked vehicles and marked cars.

Stop-and-searches were conducted along Vereeniging Road and two suspects were taken in for questioning. One man was arrested by Brackendowns SAPS for being in possession of a dangerous weapon.

The partnership between the police, private security and community safety is an ongoing initiative that will target problem areas.
