Donated school supplies to improve academic performance

As from January 21 just under 2 000 people responded to the school swop shop in Southgate, which started on January 16, and over 500 items of stationery and school uniforms have been collected.

JOHANNESBURG – Southgate is hosting a back-to-school swop shop where shoppers can donate new or used uniforms, backpacks, books and other stationery to the 60 children of the Orlando Children’s Home in Orlando East, Soweto. This will run until Sunday February 1.

Mirriam Mazibuko, director of the Orlando Children’s Home, is very grateful for any donations, but the home is in desperate need for educational toys for their pre-school children.

Contributors will receive Mystery Moola scratch cards based on the value of their donation, where they stand to win their share of R10 000. Parents and children doing their school shopping can also pop into the stand with their receipts for school supplies purchased from Checkers, Shoprite, CNA, Edgars, Game, Jet Mart, PEP or Pick ‘n Pay to the value of R250 or more, for a chance to win more back to school goodies.

“A good educational foundation remains central to a child’s success in life. The school supply drive is one small, but important way we get to assist learners to start the school year off with the resources they need for the best chance at success,” said Nozipho Khumalo, Marketing Manager for Southgate Mall.

With the help of the community, less fortunate children will have the resources they need to go back to school with dignity and take their futures into their own hands. This drive will also promote the spirit of helping and giving among the children it will benefit.
