UPDATE: Fatal accident leaves two dead, eight injured

A truck carrying mine sand was involved in a collision with two other trucks, a taxi and a Chrysler car at about 12:40 on Tuesday January 13, in Heidelberg Road, Crown Wood, just before the M2 (Prolecon Road/ End Street) split.

CROWN WOOD – Emer-g-Med paramedics, including Ray Ellis and Jurgen Kotze, were first on the scene, followed by EMS and JMPD.

According to Danielle Dooley from Emer-g-Med, the truck carrying the sand swerved to try and avoid one of the other trucks, overturning on the embankment and falling on top of the Chrysler, covering the car completely with sand.

It took over three hours to remove the two passengers who had succumbed to their injuries. The driver was removed from the vehicle by the jaws-of-life, having suffered head injuries and a broken leg. He was transferred to a local hospital for treatment.

Spokesperson for Joburg Metro Police, Edna Mamonyane, said, “The drivers of the two other trucks involved escaped with no injuries and the driver and six passengers from the taxi were all taken to hospitals in the area.”

Heavy duty towing equipment was brought to the scene to assist in lifting the truck partially off the car, enabling EMS to remove the body of the front seat passenger.

Mamonyane said, “Inspectors from Pretoria have been called in to see if the truck carrying the mine sand was road worthy at the time of the accident.

“A case of culpable homicide will be opened and more investigations will be carried out by JMPD Serious Accident Unit.”
