Lion of Alberton court case postponed

Sentencing did not take place as expected since Social Services had to be called in to ensure the safety and placement of Nsofor's child.

ALBERTON NORTH – The kingpin in drug circles in Alberton North, Philip Nsofor (aka Lion of Alberton and also knowns as Stranger) appeared in court on Wednesday for the first of a two-day hearing to determine his sentence.

During arguments for and against the accused, it came to light that Nsofor has a child in South Africa, who is currently staying with a friend. Therefore sentencing did not take place as expected since Social Services had to be called in to ensure the safety and placement of the child.

The case has been postponed until November 19, when a date for sentencing will be established.

Nsofor is the first individual in South Africa found guilty on charges of racketeering. Other charges on which he was found guilty include participating in an enterprise, managing an enterprise, dealing in drugs and contradiction of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002.

A six-year-long investigation by the Hawks finally sunk the dealer. After infiltrating his drug circles, the Hawks managed to get a runner on board whom Nsofor sent to Brazil to collect cocaine. He was arrested when a runner returned, and handed over the cocaine.

Nsofor remains in custody.
