SAPS reluctant to talk about problems

The RECORD was sent from one person to the next when trying to find out what is really happening at Alberton SAPS

THE Station Commander was approached to answer questions, not only about the meeting that took place on Thursday October 30, but about rumours that have been spreading around Alberton.

The Station Commander’s open door policy was tested today, after the RECORD tried to make an appointment with her.

The RECORD has previously tried to make contact with the Colonel Kubone via email. The station has been having trouble with their system and emails have not gone through to the Station Commander.

In an attempted to make an appointment in person with the Station Commander, the RECORD was simply referred to the Communications Officer.

This happened after asking the Communications Officer about the rumours that the Station Commander is receiving threats. Sgt Nkuna stated that these questions are of a personal nature and the Station Commander should be approached.

When posing a question about the shortages that the Alberton Police station is experiencing at present, the RECORD was advised to speak to the Provincial Spokesperson, Lt Col Dlamini Lungelo.

In an attempt to find out what the status of the Alberton SAPS vehicles, bullet proof vests, ammunition and firearms were, the RECORD received this response:

“Police may not discuss operational matters with the media. Some of these operational matters are discussed with structures, for example Community Police Forums, who are representatives of the community and also concerned with the security and safety of the residents,” Lt Col Dlamini Lungelo said.

The question posed to the police by the RECORD came after reporters heard rumours about shortages.

Reporters have also noted that vehicles on Alberton crime scenes come from different wards and do not have Alberton signification on them.
