SAPS members restless before union meeting

Tabled on the agenda: Victimization and harassment by the Station Commander

A MONTHLY union meeting described as normal took place at Alberton SAPS on October 30.

According to Sgt Nkuna, the communications officer, the union meetings take place every month.

When asked if union members usually dance and sing before starting the meeting, he stood by his previous answer that this is a normal meeting.

The union members were described as “impatient”. This was also the reason given when asked why they were singing and dancing.

Journalists were asked not to take photos and were told that they will be escorted off the property if they took any photos of what can be described as “a protest”.

The Station Commander did not attend the meeting. It was explained that there are different unions and this might be the reason that she is not attending.

It was also noted that the meeting was open for anyone to attend, except for the media.

The notification on a wall at the police station describes the meeting as a general meeting and invites all members of POPCRU and SAPU. At the bottom it also urges members to come in their numbers.

Journalists are waiting for the meeting to finish for more information to become available.
