Gallons of water wasted

Clean water leaked all night in Alberton's 7th Avenue

ALBERTON – Residents may be getting tired of complaining about leaking drains and sewage water causing a stink, but when gallons of drinkable water started bubbling out of the ground, residents reacted quickly to see it closed.

Concerned resident Frank Ford, who is part of the team operating a business near the Matric Warehouse, saw the water leaking out of the ground on Monday September 1 and reported it immediately.

“On Tuesday night, around 20:00, people came to to have a look, and they removed the paving and that opened the way for the water to leak faster. It become a bigger concern when it was left like that and the following morning it looked worse,” Frank said.

When the RECORD arrived on the afternoon of Wednesday September 3, the water was still leaking, and since it was flowing on the corner of the intersection, cars turning into Louis Trichardt Street had to drive in both lanes of the street, just to avoid driving in flowing water.

Fortunately it was closed later on Wednesday, but DA ward 37 Councillor Bruna Haipel said this was a very serious situation, which should have reported to her immediately to ascertain the leak was closed sooner.

Cllr Bruna Haipel appreciates and thanks Frank Ford, who is new in Alberton, for reporting the matter quickly and doing what he could to make sure water does go to waste unnoticed.

“I want to advise residents of this ward to inform me sooner, should something like this happen again. They can phone me at 082 454 6956 or send me an email to bruna.haipel@absamail.co.za,” she added.
