Building collapse: Trust for families of deceased set up

Funds will be distributed among the families of the deceased and account details will be made available in due time.

ALBERTON – The community of the Meyersdal Eco Estate along with Jurgens Bekker Attorneys will set up a trust for the families of the deceased.

Donations will be accepted from the public and will raise funds for several weeks. Funds will then be distributed among the families of the deceased. Account details will be made available in due time.

This follows the tragedy where sevenĀ people lost their lives when a structure at a house in the Estate collapsed. The owner was busy with alterations. It has also been confirmed that there were no approved building plans for the alterations in place.

According to the latest reports seven workers died on site. Emergency Services are still involved in rescue operations and a final report is not yet available.

The Estate said in a release on behalf of the Meyersdal Eco Estate that their prayers are with those affected and their families.

“We conitnue to give our full co-operation to the various emergency services involved in the rescue operation. We are thankful tot he brave men and women involved in the rescue operation.”

  1. Before the public start sending money to help the families of those poor souls killed and injured, what are the employers of the workmen doing?
    Has the property owner any responsibility?
    Has anybody been arrested for culpable homicide?
    Has any claim been made to the Workmans Compensation?
    I get the nagging feeling that we are heading for another long drawn out enquiry that will die in the passage of time.

  2. i would like to support david on his statement.somebody must be held accountable for the death of our brothers. i personally lost a Brother[ frans Motshelo kekana] on that fatefull day 18.08.2014.this date will remaind of brother.we are busy with going up and down filling up forms for the workmans compensation at the moment.we want the full report on what caused the structure to collapse, who where the inspectors,egineers ,we want answers.
