Coenbuild to the rescue

All it took was one phone call and companies willing to reach out to their community ...

NEWMARKET – Amidst a world seemingly in chaos with endless fighting and tragic deaths, some good always emerges to restore one’s faith in humankind.

All it took was one phone call and within a month, a 70 metre in length and two metre high brick wall was built to separate the In-patient Unit at Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services in New Market Park from Heidelberg Road.

The need for a solid brick wall to break the noise levels from the ongoing traffic flow on Heidelberg Road became a priority as the In-Patient Unit, situated on the AMCARE premises, is now fully occupied almost all the time.

Coenie Strydom from Coenbuild Builders did not hesitate for a minute when approached to help build the wall. He teamed up with Naomi Strydom from One-Stop Building Supplies, and between them, Naomi supplying the building material and Coenie the workforce, the wall was built at no cost to the Hospice or to AMCARE.

“We cannot begin to describe the difference this wall is making in the unit,” says Tersia Burger, CEO at Stepping Stone Hospice. “We look after terminally ill patients, and we at all times try and make their stay with us as dignified and comfortable as possible. Noise from the endless traffic flow on this road made this task at times almost impossible.”

For Coenie, this act of kindness was a way for him to give back and show his appreciation for the work done at Hospice. “I received the phone call, and I just knew that I had to help. And I’m grateful that this will have a lasting effect on the work done by the Hospice team,” he says.

Stepping Stone Hospice & Care Services is an independent community-driven organisation, and the first ever service of its kind in the greater Alberton area of Ekurhuleni.
