Public meeting: You are invited to have a say about high power lines on August 14

The public is invited to attend a public meeting about power lines

ON August 7, a meeting informing the community about high power lines which is to be implemented in the Alberton CBD, was discussed at the chamber building of the Ekurhuleni Council facility in Taljaard Street, Alberton. (Refer to the website of the RECORD for more information regarding the power lines).

Councillor Michael Basch opened the meeting by welcoming everyone who attended. Councillor Estelle Visser said a prayer and then Councillor Bruna Haipel addressed the issue of the Eskom high power lines (pylons).

During Bruna’s discussion, she mentioned that the Eskom power lines issue was discussed in a participation meeting, but it was not done properly. Eskom discussed where the pylons would go, while community members raised various questions and objections which resulted in a public outcry.

Council members preferred the proposed route that Eskom was supposed to implement, but when the routes were reviewed with an alternate route planned, it was no longer preferred.

The new route involves the power lines passing through the Alberton CBD and people’s properties in Alberton North, which has a number of risk factors including it being a health hazard.

Bruna has discussed the matter with the necessary Ekurhuleni and Eskom officials and met with her fellow council members and the COO on Monday August 11. The outcome and additional information will be discussed on August 14 where the Eskom officials will be present.

Attend if you want to have a say:

Councillors noted that if the public would like to be involved they can have their say on Thursday, August 14 at the Council facility. For more information contact councillors via email:
