Mad Hatter’s event to raise funds for cancer

The funds were raised through contributions from the public

A MAD HATTER’S High Tea party for CHOC event was celebrated at the La Joie Café in Ascot Road on August 2 to raise funds for the Childhood Cancer Awareness campaign.

Madeleine van Niekerk, who is an Out of Africa Winter Queen finalist from Alberton, hosted the event. The main mission of the event was to raise funds for the campaign. The mission for the “Out of Africa” pageant is to help women across the continent “to be the change they want to see in the world,” she explained.

The pageant gives finalists different tasks, one of which is to raise funds to the sum total of R16 000, of which a percentage will go to CHOC, and she is also part of the Awareness for Childhood Cancer Campaign.

There were two guest speakers. Nicky Strydom from Alberton, whose daughter Sarah was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma just before her eighth birthday and has been in remission for 10 years, wrote a book called Spunky about her cancer experience and how against all odds she became a provincial badminton player.

The book started as a scrapbook when she was in hospital having chemo and ended in her matric year. It is available from Exclusive Books, from Nicky Strydom herself or from the website: www. heartspacebooks.com

The second speaker was Raynolda Makhutle, a volunteer from Cancervive who battled with cervical, ovarian and colon cancer, but is currently in remission.

Madeleine would like to thank her sponsors, who made the event possible: Joan from La Joie Café, Petrus Keyter from Piks Photography, Vicky Steenberg from Brizaz Events Planning and Leonard Lang, who was the entertainer, MC, Zelda Botha from Sharp Edge, Cynthia Lok from Body Essence and Keba from The Firm Glenvista.
