Caxton Reynolds Race: The Shopping Challenge

Is it true that women do more grocery shopping than men? Well, the contents of the Caxton Reynolds Race 2014 put this myth to the test on Saturday, July 12, at Benoni Market Spar.

BENONI – Each team was given a grocery list with 20 items and they all had 10 minutes to collect as many items as they can from the shelves in the store. The team with the most items walked away with the highest points for this leg of the race.

Team Kempton Express and The Tembisan was the team that collected the most items on the day .There was however a tie for 3rd place between team Bedfordview Edenvale News and Joburg East Express and the Joburg South team.

To break the tie one team member from each team had to stand in a -15 degrees freezer and the first member to come out would have lost out on being placed 3rd.

This went on for 50 minutes and fearing for their health and hyperthermia the organisers of the event offered the two teams a different tie breaker which they declined and team Bedfordview and Edenvale News and Joburg East Express decided to give team Joburg South the 3rd place for this leg of the race.

Upon completing this task, the contestants had to quickly take part in a hotdog eating competition, in a race to win a R500 shopping voucher from Benoni Market Spar.

Team Benoni City Times and Germiston City News both came to a tie in this challenge and they decided to split the voucher in half.

The winners of this year’s race will earn an all-expenses paid trip to Zanzibar, sponsored by SA Reynolds Travel Centre, in Springs.

The next challenge will take place in Joburg South at Kenilworth Market Spar, on Saturday, July 19. The challenge on this day will determine which three teams will be moving forward for the final race.

Team Brakpan unfortunately was unable to make it to this task.
