Police keep the peace on the streets of Alrode

The steel workers took to the streets of Alrode again today but with the police presence it was peaceful gathering.

ALBERTON – The steel workers’ strike is still taking place nationally, and the effects can be felt close to home as steel workers took to the streets of Alrode again today.

There were Police vehicles present in the area and in close proximity to the striking workers. Even though there are striking steel workers armed with large sticks the strike did not seem to become violent while reporters were on the scene.

There have been reports of property damage nationally and in parts of Alberton related to the strike.

A steel worker, 36, working in Alrode explained that he was not satisfied with the way NUMSA was handling the strike. “We are not happy at all.”

The demands are not being met, and the union has lowered their demands without talking to those striking.

He also added that they are thinking about moving to a different union, because they do not feel that they union is working for them.
