Spur Assault: Employees tried to rescue Bradley

"I have nothing but the highest respect for my managers, waiters and staff who did everything in their power to try and prevent this terrible tragedy." Brett Milligan, owner of Little Eagle Spur.

ALBERTON – Five of the Spur six, accused of the murder of Bradley de Preez (20) at the Spur, Lemon Tree on Sunday evening, was known to Bradley and his family.

A family member of Bradley made contact with the RECORD stating that the five, known to the family, have not only been told by Bradley’s father that they are not welcome in their home, but that they also have prior convictions.

A daily newspaper reports that the incident was sparked by an argument between Bradley and the six while they where all in the smokers’ section. There were no Spur staff in that section at that moment so nobody knows what has been said.

The paper further reports that they had access to footage, where it can be seen how one of the accused threw a bone from his plate at Bradley and that sparked a squabble. Bradley was then asked to leave the restaurant, and at that stage he threw a bottle at the group. Then follows the scenes in which the six tackled Bradley and beat him and the Spur manager and his waiters trying to break up the fight.

When the Spur employees managed to free Bradley from the group of six, they helped him to the restaurant’s front counter. Bradley was still alive at this stage. The doors were then locked by the manager on duty at the Spur for the evening, to stop the six from leaving and the SAPS were notified of the incident.

Paramedics declared Bradley dead on the scene and the police arrested the six.

The wife of the Spur’s owner posted on the RECORD’s Facebook page that claims from Mrs Lopez (the mother of one of the accused), that there is a video which will be viewed on Thursday and the truth be revealed on Friday cannot be true, because she knows for a fact that only the Spur and SAPS have a copy of the footage.

In the report, the Spur manager praised his staff, who tried to defuse the situation, but that there was nothing more they could do. One of the waiters also made a statement that the six were aggressive and also refused to settle their bill.

  1. Come on ALBERTON REKORD… before printing something do your research. Mrs. Lopez did not say she had the video, read her comment its on your page! she said “There was a video and it will be seen on Thursday and the facts will be disclosed on Friday” she never said anything about having the video!!! You guys assumed she had the video and asked her to share it. so either you were misinformed by whoevers wife who is making up stories to make people look bad or you guys @ALBERTON REKORD are not doing your job by doing research as journalists should. why not wait until Friday before running peoples names through the mud!!! what happened is terrible i wont deny it… but i think we should all wait til Friday before assuming anything!

  2. Why did the staff not press the panic button to call security? This spur needs that new safenow bracelet panic button on their staff’s arms, so they can activate a speedy response, like other business do. And at least their customers would be ” Safenow “

  3. This is absolutely disgusting. The only people to blame are the six aggressive people. Not spur or alberton record. Lets not take the attention away from who is really to Blame here. The fact remains that someone’s life has been taken.

  4. Lock them up and throw the key away. There
is violence every where What the hell is wrong
with the youth, same as the Waterkloof four
This is a cowardly act.Military training should be brought back, as well as discipline in schools which is non existant and this is part of the reason for these spineless youths

  5. It is not spur’s Duty to have their staff do drills in times of panic from criminals beating up customers, they saw the attack and jumped in those cowards who outnumbered that young boy will have a ball in prison! They will individually be beaten weekly! Hope they enjoy what’s coming to them! Sick!! My thoughts are with those parents who lost their son! He was brave to take on 6 people all by himself!

  6. Whatever caused the argument, there is nothing fair or heroic in 6 people attacking 1 person on his own. It’s only cowards who attack in gangs, and I pray that they get what they deserve. NO VERBAL altercation is serious enough to kill somebody over. Lock them up and throw away the key. My sympathy to the victim’s family and friends.

  7. I think this is totally disgusting that a Family cannot even go out to Sour for an evenings dinner. Where was the the Security and the Manager when all of this was going on? i live in Alberton and I will now be boycotting Spur at the Lemon Tree for all the year’s that I continue to live in Alberton.
This is a total tradgey to Bradley and his family. I hope the 6 that were arrested get life sentences for his Murder.

  8. This is truly shocking… a few hours before this all happened he was so happy in the smoking area having a beer. We were the as a family for a birthday. on our way out we still chatted about soccer specially me wearing a Portugal jacket, he meant no harm what so ever, we laughed at the jokes. He really made my day. Now a an hour or two later this all happened to the guy…. for what!! this is not SPUR’s fault..

  9. from what I know one of the guys from the group phoned the ambulance and the cops not spur.

  10. A family lost their son, brother, cousin and friend no matter how you try to justify the behavior of the 6 boys involved, it’s a sad state of affairs and a unforgivable act of violence, which has not only shattered the lives of his family but of the accused too! Nobody won this fight did they? My prayers are with the family of the victim.

  11. I hope the guilty cowards stay in jail there whole life and get the same treatment and dont make it out

  12. wow, the Oscar Trial has helped these murderers. out on R500 bail……. what a JOKE
