Teach children how to react when in danger

From the SAPS Alberton desk - June is child protection month, take the time to teach your child a few things so that they can be save.

ALBERTON – When children are left home alone, there are a few things to take into consideration to make sure they are less vulnerable to dangerous situations.

Children should not be left alone at home or elsewhere, where they can become susceptible to abuse, alcohol or drugs. They should be taught to give directions to their home in case of emergencies.

When children carry a house key with them, they should keep it in a safe place. Do not leave keys under a mat, or a ledge outside the house. Children should never let callers, at the door or on the phone, know they are alone.

Teach children to say: ‘My mom (or dad) can’t come to the phone or door right now.’ Teach children that they should keep the doors and windows locked. Teach them their parents’ and emergency numbers. They should know their home street address.

Teach them that it is fine to say ‘no’ when they are faced with uncomfortable situations. If children feel threatened or are in an emergency, teach them how to react appropriately.

They should run away, yell loudly and tell you exactly what is happening. They should yell: ‘This is not my mom (or dad).’

‘Help, I am being kidnapped.’ Or ‘Help, call the police.’ These tips have been compiled by Constable Mgedezi.
