According to reports the accident occurred at around 00:30 on the N17 when the vehicle’s right tyre burst and the driver of the Subaru lost control of the vehicle, which crashed into a pillar on the highway. Chanel and Reynard were passengers.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng, spokesperson of the EMM metro police, said that Renyard, Chanel and the driver of the vehicle, Lizahn Venter, were thrown out of the vehicle. The Subaru caught fire while Gustav was still in the vehicle.

Emergency services saved him from the wreck. Lizahn was taken to the Union Hospital in Alberton and Gutstav to Baragwanath in Soweto. They were on their way from Lusito Land festival in Johannesburg to Boksburg.

Reynard Burger’s memorial service was held on May 2 at 10:00 from the Alberton LewenSentrum, and Chanel’s on May 3 at the Old Apostolic Church in General Alberts Park at 11:00.

Chanel’s parents, Abraham and Ella, told the RECORD that Chanel had a passion for children and she was planning to study teaching part-time through Unisa next year because she had a part-time job at the aftercare at Alberview Primary.

Her mom described her as a very bubbly person who always had a big smile on her face. “She always wanted to help other people, it was in her nature. She had so much love to give and wanted to make an impact on other people’s lives.”
