Land grabbers continue with illegal building

Despite being ordered to stop building in Riemvasmaak, land is still being sold and a second illegal house is going up.

ALBERTON – Last week the RECORD published the land grabbing story and illegal building of houses in extension 5 – Riemvasmaak. It was alleged that the homeless people from Thokoza were buying vacant stands for R2 500.

The metro police arrived last week at the vacant piece of land and instructed the crowds to stop marking of stands for themselves as the practice was illegal. The contractor found building the first house was also instructed to stop.

However, hardly seven days have gone by and a contractor was found building another house not far from the first one.

It now seems obvious that the so-called ‘homeless’ people have no regard for council rules and regulations.

The RECORD spoke to the ward councillor, G Zide, who commented as follows: “I visited the site on Tuesday, April 1 and noticed a house foundation being laid. A council stand can not be sold by anyone. A crime is being committed by the ones who are selling the stands.

“This is an illegal action by the people and any structure build on the site will definitely be demolished by the metro council.”
