The Bag Lady

Find out what The Bag Lady's been up to this week and where she has visited.

SOUTH OF JOHANNESBURG – I apologise if you have sent a lemon in and it’s not been addressed yet! Time is rushing by and my weeks seem to get busier and busier. A good sign – but sometimes it seems all work and no play!

Over the next few weeks we have early deadlines so, please be patient and I’ll get around to (the lemons) as soon as possible.

Something new at Boardmans

A new range, Tala, kitchen gadgets and containers, etc, is really cool and available at Boardmans, The Glen. Made by hand in Liverpool, England, UK this range will certainly jazz up a boring kitchen.  Will also make great engagement or wedding gifts and will be something different from the norm. Pop along and take a look!

Flour sifter in the Tala range.

Focus on Local

This week I went along to Cherubs in De Marionette Centre, Blue Crane Drive, Meyersdal. Owned by Isabel Motsoatsos for the past 17 years, Cherubs offers a delightful restaurant, home industry and gift shop, all in one.

Picture an old fashioned shop from yesteryear, decorated with a vintage theme and offering a peaceful and relaxing ambience, Cherubs is absolutely charming.

Isabel Motsoatsos, owner of Cherubs.

Maresel De Koker, the restaurant manager, told me they only use the finest ingredients in the kitchen, like ‘real’ butter, which totally did it for me! I just can’t eat margarine at all and can taste it even if disguised in a sandwich with lashings of mayonnaise.

They serve breakfasts to die for, toasted sandwiches, filled vol-au-vents, light meals and delicious slices of home-made cakes and tarts, and the very best cappuccino.

On the home industry side of the business, you’ll find freshly made cakes, biscuits, tarts, special occasion cakes (birthdays, etc) which can be made to order as well as savoury and sweet platters. Maresel bakes the most delicious biscuits for the shop, I tried a gingerbread man, simply delicious and the wonderful thing is, she also makes small novelty biscuits, ie, rabbits and crosses (for Easter) as well as gingerbread men. They are each beautifully hand iced. I was really impressed with her Message Biscuits. These are made from shortbread and iced individually according to what you want to say. Obviously the message can’t be too long but ‘thank you’, ‘best wishes’, ‘happy birthday mom’ etc, will fit. These will also be suitable as invitations for parties, baby showers and weddings.

Cherubs – where the atmosphere is friendly and the food heavenly – is open Monday to Friday 07:30 to 17:00, Saturday 07:30 to 15:00 and Sunday 08:30 to 13:00. Phone 011 867 6160.

Well, that’s it for this week. Enjoy, enjoy and pop along to Cherubs for a cuppa and slice of ‘heavenly’ cake.  Oh, and Shop till you drop.
