Illegal selling of vacant stands

A vacant piece of land set aside by Ekurhuleni Metro Council to build 63 RDP houses, has sparked a land-grabbing situation in extention 5, Riemvasmaak.

EDEN PARK – “On Sunday March 23 we noticed a big group of people having a meeting on the vacant stands.

“These were all people from Thokoza. The following day, Monday March 24, we saw people marking off stands to build houses. They said they bought the stands for R2 500 from ANC officials, who addressed the meeting on the previous day.

“I tried to speak to one of the land sellers but he got into his car and just drove away,” said Minah Booysens, who is one of the community leaders in extention 5.

The news spread like wildfire and within an hour, homeless residents of Eden Park waiting for houses, rushed to the scene and everybody was marking off a stand. The marking-off grew bigger on Tuesday and the Metro police were summoned.

The RECORD consulted Ward Councillor Gladstone Zide, who said he knew nothing about stands being sold. Zide said: “This is an illegal selling of council property. The council knows nothing about this act or even the individuals acting as sellers.”

The Metro police spoke to the people who were pointed out as being the alleged sellers. Their names, cell numbers and addresses were noted down.
