How Alberton was built and how it has grown

Alberton has grown and there are more possibilities for further growth within all the areas of Alberton

ALBERTON is a geographical mapping region that is located in Gauteng, South Africa, which has grown into an establishment with many of the areas filled with homes, shopping malls and industrial developments, i.e. Alrode, which is Alberton’s current industrial suburb, established in 1943.

The RECORD’s history dates as far back as the 1970’s – it wasnā€™t until 1976, when Johann van der Merwe took over from Maurice Franks, when the name Alberton RECORD was associated with Albertonā€™s newspaper. There was a time when the land was vacant without any of the buildings we see today. It has grown with a diversity of things to do or means to make life easier for the community by supplying them with a livelihood.

The first post office of Alberton was opened in 1926 and further developments took place. In 1938 building started on a town hall. The streets of Alberton North were renamed after Voortrekkers in 1938 to coincide with the 100-year commemoration of the Great Trek (an eastward and north-eastward migration away from British control). The well known Blou Meul was established in 1945 in Van Riebeeck Street, Alberton North, and still trades today as a general store specialising in outdoor activity.

The construction of Alberton Boulevard was a major development, starting in the late 1980s with the aim of converting a section of Voortrekker Road that runs past the Alberton City Shopping Mall (one of the older malls in the area) into a pedestrian-friendly zone. The Alberton Boulevard has changed over time, having structured figures in sequence on one of the islands in the centre of the road, but have since been removed (some information compiled from Wikipedia and information from our sources show what Alberton looks like as of February 19 and 20).

The new Mall of the South on Swartkoppies and Klip River drives is currently being built and not much more is known about it at this early stage. The community will be informed as soon as there is information available.
