Homeless people reveal the truth about street life

Homeless men tell their side of the story and how they landed on the streets.

ALBERTON – Charles Uckerman is a thirty-year-old man who recently became homeless due to circumstances.

He stands on Ring Road West, St Austell and sometimes near Voortrekker Road. He sleeps outside on street corners or places where he can find available space. He begs on the streets for food in order to survive.

He was working but explains that he was hit by a taxi around two months ago and that is when he lost his job. According to him, his employee said that if he did not work for two weeks they would have to let him go.

Charles lived with his father on a rented property. His father passed away recently, leaving Charles homeless. He has tried to find a job, but when he goes for an interview, the employees say, “I’ll get back to you” or “I’ll let you know”, leaving Charles with little or no hope of getting on his feet again.

He has been applying for the work of boiler making or jobs in the industrial area where he had previous experience.

Shaun, a 26-year-old man, made bad choices in his life, has no mother or father and left Alberton March last year in order to get away from a drug-related situation. On his return to Alberton recently, he has been looking for a job with working experience as a boiler maker.

“Being homeless breaks my confidence and cuts my self-image. I would love the opportunity to get a job to support myself and get food. I need help to get a new I.D. in order to apply for a job,” said Shaun.

Shaun stands on the entry island of Voortrekker Road M31. If anyone would like to lend a helping hand to someone in need, you can find these men in the surrounding areas.
